Description

Nandrolone decanoate (better known among bodybuilders under such brand names as Deca-Durabolin or Retabolil) is one of the most popular and widespread steroids in the world. 

Testosterone may be the only steroid that is more popular than nandrolone decanoate. Deca-Durabolin has earned such a reputation for two main reasons: its synergetic properties and a well-balanced action concerning side effects. 

However, athletes all over the world use this anabolic-androgenic steroid for more advantages than just those two.

History

Deca-Durabolin was originally made for medical purposes (mainly for treating such diseases as osteoporosis in elderly women) by the pharmaceutical company Organon in the mid-50’s and was made available for purchase in 1962. 

Just as many other steroids first produced for medicinal usage, nandrolone decanoate was also found by the bodybuilding community and quickly became the most popular drug for combinations with testosterone or other steroids. Many athletes find its mild side effects and great effects to be very appealing.

Deca-Durabolin is considered a special anabolic drug due to certain unique properties. The majority of Retabolil’s side effects can be reduced or completely neutralized when used in combination with other testosterone-based steroids. It can be used for cutting and for mass gain, but first things first.

It continues its activity for 3-4 weeks after injection. Still, the peak activity happens for the first 1 or 2 weeks, after which it’s greatly reduced. Also keep in mind the drug’s cumulative effect, which maintains the high active agent level in the bloodstream during prolonged Deca-Durabolin usage.

Nandrolone’s chemical compound is almost identical to testosterone, the only difference being the lacking carbon atom in position 19. This change makes the drug produce less androgenic activity and almost none estrogenic activity. 

Deca-Durabolin Safety

An interesting thing to note is the nandrolone’s conversion to estrogen, which is 5 times less pronounced than testosterone’s. This is due to the process generally happening in the liver, and not in other sensitive areas like fat tissues.

It’s so safe that even female athletes use it in their own drug cycles, even though they are recommended to use faster-acting versions of nandrolone instead.

Doping tests

Deca-Durabolin is an injectable form of nandrolone decanoate. The name “nandrolone decanoate” itself tells us that this is an ester version of nandrolone. The main purpose of the decanoate ester is to make nandrolone dissolve very slowly, up to three or four weeks. Despite that, studies have shown that nandrolone is most active just for 1 or 2 weeks.

Still, these studies didn’t take the cumulative effect of the drug into account, with prolonged usages of Deca-Durabolin for several weeks.

Whatever the duration of Retabolil’s activity may be, it can be safely said that it stays in the body for a long time (and when we say “long”, we mean REALLY long). There were cases of Deca-Durabolin showing its traces 18 months (!) after the last injection. The basic conclusion is that nandrolone decanoate is a very hard drug to hide.

Synergy

Keeping doping tests aside, Deca-Durabolin is certainly a very special anabolic-androgenic steroid, with synergy being one of the most peculiar properties. Thanks to synergy, nandrolone decanoate has been (and still is) a favorite among athletes when dealing with combinations with other steroids for a long time.

Unlike testosterone-based steroids that produce dihydrotestosterone metabolites (DHT), nandrolone decanoate breaks down to the weaker dehydronandrolone metabolites, which produce a reduced androgenic effect:

• This leads to the weaker dehydronandrolone metabolites taking the place of stronger DHT derivatives in the androgen receptors;
• This results in pronounced side effects associated with natural testosterone production (erectile dysfunction known as Deca-Dick among athletes, suppressed sex drive etc).

This is why Deca-Durabolin produces fewer side effects when used in combination with other testosterone-based steroids without boosting the negative effects of testosterone itself. Aside from suppressing natural testosterone production, nandrolone decanoate produces almost no side effects when used at optimal dosages. 

When nandrolone decanoate is used with testosterone though, the latter neutralizes this side effect. This means that a bodybuilder is able to use more anabolic drugs with less side effects. That’s the basic gist of synergy – making the combined usage of two steroids greater than their effects when used separately.

More than that, such side effects as acne, greasy skin and hair loss are extremely rare due to nandrolone decanoate’s low androgenic activity.

As for results, Retabolil is probably not the best drug when it comes to mass gain, but it can get you a significant increase in quality muscle mass if you have a bit of patience. • Swelling is possible when injecting high dosages of the drug, which will make the muscles more bulky;

All in all, Deca-Durabolin can be used both for cutting and for mass gain, it all depends on the dosages and the ways the user takes care of swelling.

Other essential aspects of nandrolone decanoate

Many studies claim that Deca-Durabolin can produce very beneficial effects for people suffering from various health problems. Keep in mind that these studies used low doses of nandrolone decanoate, certainly lower than regular doses used by athletes for the maximal possible anabolic effect.

Deca-Durabolin was proven to be effective in increasing bone mass, which explains its use for treatment of osteoporosis in elderly women. More than that, nandrolone decanoate can partially help in treating joint problems due to its increased production of collagen and fluid retention in the joints. 

Just as Anadrol and Anavar, nandrolone decanoate showed great results in HIV therapy for slim disease patients, administered at just 100 mg every two weeks for stimulated muscle growth in the patients.

Another experiment included HIV patients using nandrolone decanoate long-term, which didn’t impact their cholesterol level, triglycerides level or insulin susceptibility. Even more so, it helped reduce their high-density lipoprotein levels.

The abovementioned nitrogen accumulation not only helps in quality muscle growth, but also improves cardiovascular activity. This is a great addition to the overall strength improvement caused by nandrolone decanoate.

Tips for Retabolil post-cycle therapy

Despite Retabolil being very safe, PCT is still essential, and there are some peculiarities for proper nandrolone decanoate PCT. As mentioned above, the decanoate ester makes this version of nandrolone very long-lasting, so it will stay in the body long after the cycle’s been complete. 

We also mentioned the importance of using Deca-Durabolin with an additional testosterone-based steroid to avoid Deca-Dick and other side effects.

The trick to proper Deca-Durabolin PCT is that you need to continue using testosterone for 2 weeks after the nandrolone decanoate cycle has been complete. This is done to maintain the hormonal balance while nandrolone decanoate leaves the body, since leftover traces of it will still suppress body’s own testosterone production.

As for additional drugs for PCT, we recommend using Nolvadex (tamoxifen), HCG and Clomid.

It’s no surprise that Deca-Durabolin is the second most popular injectable steroid in the world. It’s been available for purchase for more than 50 years, so it had enough time to win over loyal customers, and many combinations with the use of nandrolone decanoate managed to become a classic among bodybuilders.

One such combination is Deca-Durabolin + testosterone/Dianabol, which is worth your attention:

• This combo’s become so popular that many athletes can’t even imagine using testosterone or Dianabol without additional nandrolone decanoate;
• It’s only logical, though – who wouldn’t want extra strength and muscle volume without side effects;
• Another popular combo is Winstrol + Deca-Durabolin, or even Winstrol + Deca-Durabolin + Dianabol.

Just as testosterone and Dianabol, Deca-Durabolin can be safely called one of the oldest commercially available steroids on the market. There were almost no anti-estrogen drugs back then, so Deca-Durabolin was considered a great alternative to testosterone considering its aromatization, in the times before people began using it in combination with testosterone. 

Nandrolone decanoate had more than enough time to become one of the founding elements of the steroid industry.

Counterfeit

A product as popular as Deca-Durabolin will unfortunately spawn many counterfeit drugs. As such, Deca-Durabolin is the second most forged steroid. The fact that it’s produced in so many countries makes purchases even more risky. Still, solid knowledge of brand names can help customers avoid fraud and disappointment.

Side effects

Even though nandrolone decanoate produces low estrogenic activity, it still has pronounced progestin activity. Due to progesterone side effects being similar to those of estrogen, users can encounter:

• Puffiness;
• Gynecomastia;
• Acneiform rash;
• Suppressed testosterone. 

Consequently, keeping progesterone in check is extremely important when using Deca-Durabolin. Such anti-progestin drugs as cabergoline and bromocriptine can be used for this.

Athletes predisposed to gynecomastia should weigh all pros and cons of Retabolil, preferably choosing some other steroid instead. If the classic drug is still the choice you make, the above mentioned antiprogestin drugs should be used along with steroids, or at least be readily available.

In any case, all those progestin side effects are rare and manifest only when injecting high doses of nandrolone decanoate. 

Natural Testosterone Production Suppression

A side effect that’s not so rare when using Deca-Durabolin is the suppression of natural testosterone production. One study had volunteers inject nandrolone decanoate and a single intake of a dosage as low as 100 mg completely suppressed the natural testosterone levels. 

Even though their testosterone level normalized in a month, the experiment still clearly shows the extremely strong effect of nandrolone decanoate.

The conclusion is clear – as was mentioned above, Deca-Durabolin should always be used with testosterone-based steroids to avoid such problems. Another precaution you may take is to strictly follow the proper dosages of the drug, as only the extreme doses of nandrolone decanoate cause side effects. 

This means that users don’t have to worry about other combined steroids’ (like testosterone or Dianabol) side effects as much. The same goes for PCT, which has all its special guidelines concerning testosterone-related side effects like low sex drive or erectile dysfunction.

Half-life

The half-life for Deca-Durabolin is estimated at about 6-8 days. Keep in mind that many studies confirm the drug stays in the body for 3-4 weeks, its traces detectable even months later.

Initially, nandrolone decanoate was supposed to be injected once every 3 weeks, but bodybuilders use nandrolone decanoate once a week due to its peak activity of about 4 days.

Consequently, nandrolone decanoate is accumulated for the whole drug cycle, making its concentration in the bloodstream stable.

Dosages and usage

A recommended dosage for athletes is between 200 and 600 mg per week. Not a lot of people ever exceed these dosages. There may be two explanations for that:

• The first is that Deca-Durabolin’s doses should not exceed those of testosterone or other steroids used in the combination; 
• The second being that Deca-Durabolin produces significant results at recommended dosages, so using more than 600 mg per week will simply cause more harm than good.

A possible rule for the ideal dosage is the ratio of 4 mg per 1 kg of body weight.

The dosage is also dependent on the goals set by the bodybuilder, for example, there’s no need for high doses of Retabolil if the athlete needs to gain lean and well-defined muscles. On the other hand, increased dosages may be used for pumped muscle mass. 

The steroid is so safe that some adventurers even use up to 1200-1500 mg per week. This approach calls for many precautions and extensive experience with steroids.

The drug cycles can be rather long due to the asteroid’s safety and mild side effects. Usually a Deca-Durabolin cycle lasts for 8-12 weeks. Some bodybuilders go for 16 weeks, but the risk of side effects (caused by nandrolone decanoate or other steroids in the combination) is also greatly increased.

Despite some female athletes using nandrolone decanoate at low dosages (50 mg per week), it’s still not recommended for women:

• Masculinization effects are quite common and can be hard to combat due to nandrolone decanoate remaining in the body for so long;
• Women are better off using some faster-acting versions of nandrolone, if they still choose to go through with that steroid.

Summary

Deca-Durabolin has become a classic and an important part of many bodybuilders’ combinations, particularly those fond of tried and true approaches. It completely deserved this, too. This steroid produces significant anabolic effects, and it goes great in combination with other steroids. 

The most peculiar part of Deca-Durabolin is its side effects being suppressed by other steroids in a combo, which allows for more anabolic drugs being used without additional side effects.

Many studies have shown that the steroid may positively affect such aspects as lipid levels, mineral concentration in the bones, the immune system, connective tissue and others. Consequently, Deca-Durabolin can be very beneficial when dealing with the general state of health.

Athletes that have to face doping tests should avoid nandrolone decanoate. Its traces can be detected several months after the last injections, even a year in some cases.

Despite it being very safe, Deca-Durabolin still has some peculiarities like proper PCT and the drug cycle routine that need to be followed in order to avoid the few possible side effects.
